The Armor of God – Part 5

Part five, and finally the last part of the Armor of God series. These are my favorite pieces, the helmet of salvation that started this whole study, and hopefully everyone’s favorite, the sword, or the Word of God.

The Helmet of Salvation

Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

This piece of armor started my study! I was spending time with the Lord thinking about how you can upgrade your sword by learning more scripture. Then I felt challenged by the Lord to read this verse again. Revelation knowledge came to me. The helmet and sword were the same verse, and the very same sentence. If you can upgrade your sword, why not your helmet? I began praying for an answer. I found it here in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Paul wrote:

“…that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

There is the answer! How do you partake of the new covenant in Jesus’ blood? Salvation! What is communion, or breaking bread and drinking the cup? It’s remembering what Jesus did for us. What did He do for us? He reconciled us to God by shedding His blood, and we receive that through salvation! This is very exciting to me! We can strengthen our helmet of salvation through communion.

Since I received this revelation, I have been doing communion almost every night with dinner. No, I do not sit around and force tears and imagine Jesus mangled on the cross. To me, communion is most often happy and filled with thanksgiving. After I quote Paul, we pray. We thank God for at least one thing in the New Covenant, or our salvation package, as I sometimes refer to it.

What is in this salvation package? Every one of the new covenant promises. As you read through the New Testament next time, look for your promises in Christ. Some of the promises in Christ:
 – Sins being washed away, and not remembered
 – Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (it’s not an anti-smoking scripture)
 – Grace, unmerited favor
 – Healing, broken-hearted and physical
 – Peace, peace of the Lord
 – Gifts, many gifts
 – Holy Spirit living inside of us as a guide
 – Royal priests, which means we don’t have a priest/man above us
 – Power/Authority over all the enemy
…and more!

2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV
For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

That’s enough to get excited when doing communion! It’s so much more than only crying about the enemy beating Jesus for us and feeling so unworthy. For example, after quoting the scripture, we just take a few seconds to praise God for what we’re thankful about in our heart that day, “Thank you Jesus that we have a healing covenant. Thank you that you took stripes for our healing.” Then, whoever is praying over the food asks blessings on our food. We eat a piece of bread or cracker, and then drink pomegranate juice. We’re Italian, we pray quick before the food gets cold!

A common misconception about the helmet of salvation: It protects your mind. Emphatically, this is NOT the case. If you think about it, the helmet protecting your mind/thought life, just means once you’re saved, you’ll never have any struggle in your mind. We all know that’s not true. I’ve heard many preachers say, “Just say thank You God I’m saved, and tighten that helmet of salvation.” Let’s read 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NKJV again:

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

What are our weapons of warfare? Our suit of armor! We can read this, “Our armor of God is not carnal, but mighty in God for…. bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”

Paul is referring to the battle that’s in your mind. Some ministers tell people that’s pulling strongholds down from cities. This scripture just refers to your mind only, because it’s our biggest battle ground. Look at what Paul said again, “WEAPONS,” not one weapon. We need more than one to conquer our mind, as in more than just a salvation helmet, to bring thoughts into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Then what is the helmet of salvation for exactly, if not mind protection. It does protect our head, our thinking, but doesn’t alone win the battle you face every day in your mind. If an attack from the enemy comes to try to tell you, “You’re no Christian. Now you’re really going to hell,” there should be no doubt of your salvation in Christ. If you lose your head, thinking you’re not a Christian and you’re going to hell, you’ve lost every battle! Then you think God is against you. Head shot, you’re done! Secure your position in Christ. If you are unsure about heaven and hell, get some scriptures out and read, repent, and rededicate if you need to. Learning what’s included in your salvation package is how to dig in deeper. Communion is remembering (the eating part) and practicing (the speaking part) the covenant you made with God through Jesus, and it’s easily done with food! We all like food!

Sword of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. I think we all understand that the greater measure of the Word in our hearts, the bigger the sword we can wield. I think it’s self-explanatory, if you have no Word in you, you have no sword.

Most often we hear opinions on which piece is offensive, which piece is defensive, and which are both. I’m here to say that it doesn’t matter. Each piece can be used in different ways. I have a friend that’s an ex-drug dealer. He said that when he realized a fight was about to happen, he would start with a surprise headbutt to their face. Why can’t we do that to the devil? “I’m saved! *BOOM* Haha devil!” All jokes aside, the most important point of the sword is to see what Jesus did in Matthew chapter 4 NKJV when he was tempted:

4But He answered and said, “It is written…
7Jesus said to him, “It is written again…
10Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written…

It is written. It is written. It is written! That’s the sword at work as a weapon.

The armor of God is God’s armor on us. It’s made so that we can look like Him, and be protected in battle and prayer. I believe when we’re fully suited up in our armor and praying, we become a mighty weapon and force against darkness. This is where the miraculous results will take place in our life. The enemy wants nothing more than for you to shut up and not pray.

May the Lord bless you and bring you to a higher place in Him where we see and hear the greater things planned for us.
